"Organic" on a bag of coffee is a regulated claim, not a marketing word. It means the coffee was grown and handled under a certified organic system and that an independent body has inspected it. Our Chiapas green coffee is Certified Organic by Mayacert.
What organic certification covers
- Farming: no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, soil and biodiversity management, and a transition period before land can be certified.
- Traceability: organic coffee must be kept separate from conventional coffee at every step, from farm to export.
- Inspection: farms and handlers are audited regularly by a certification body.
Who is Mayacert?
Mayacert is an organic certification body that inspects and certifies farms and producer organizations across Mexico and Central America. A Mayacert certificate confirms that our Chiapas lot was produced and handled under a certified organic system.
Why Chiapas is a strong organic origin
Many Chiapas farms grow coffee under shade, with low external inputs and a long tradition of cooperative production. Mexico is one of the world's leading producers of certified organic coffee, and Chiapas is at the centre of it.
What Canadian roasters should check
If you plan to sell roasted coffee as organic in Canada, organic rules apply to you too, not just to the farm:
- Ask your importer for the current organic certificate and transaction documents for the lot.
- Confirm the certification is recognized under the Canada Organic Regime for the claim you want to make.
- If you roast and package the coffee and label it organic, check whether your own operation needs organic certification.
